Historical Information: Born March 4, 1711, in Manekendorf, on the Moravian border belonging to Upper Silesia; his parents were Christian and Mariane Stach; his great-great grandfather was obliged to flee from Moravia to Saxony during the great persecution in the beginning of the preceding century. (possibly the persecution of 1620); "secretly" his sons moved to Upper Silesia (this included young Matthaeus); already in his childhood he was concerned about his soul's salvation; in the year 1721 he took service in Zaughtenthal where he was again concerned about his religious faith, and resolved to go to the Unity with his cousin, Martin Franck, who had come from Herrnhut to visit in that neighborhood. Soon after Easter, 1728, he reached Herrnhut. His father and step-mother, with their children, followed him on June 25, 1730. In the same year he was admitted to the Holy Communion. In the year 1731 he felt an impulse in his heart to offer himself for a service amoung the heathen, especially in Greenland, and he and Bro. Bonisch agreed to make this known to the congregation in writing. There was a delay until the year 1733, when he and his cousin, Christian Stach, were sent to their post in Greenland, and after numberless difficulties they reached there on May 20 of that year, accompanied by Bro. Christian David. He returned from Greenland in 1740, was married on February 4, 1741, and was ordained on December 12 of that year. In 1747 he came out for the second time bringing several "Greenlanders", and returned with them in 1749. In 1752 he was called to England in order to make an investigating journey to Terra Labrador, which, however, was not done. In that year he accompanied Bro. Johannes von Watteville on his visitation in Greenland, and returned with him in the same year. In 1753 he went on a visit to Holland, and in January, 1754, to London, where he was commissioned to bring Bro. Ballenhorst from Greenland and to take Bro. Kuntz thither in his place. On October 24 of the same year he returned safely to London with the former. In 1758 he travelled with several Brethren to Greenland and there began the new congregation-town of Lichtenfels. In 1771 he returned to Europe, and in 1772, in August, came with his wife to Bethabara from Barby. In Bethabara he took charge of the school for the little boys and she held school for the little girls. He was for some time a member of the Bethabara committee. In February, 1785, as he was bringing a pitcher of water from the spring he had a bad fall. They put him to bed, and he suffered much pain in the left side which he bore patiently, and rejoiced in the prospect of an early-home-going which followed on the 21 of December with the blessing of the congregation, and of his choir (Married Men). His journey through life lasted 76 years, 11 months, two weeks, and three days.
